When Illumi first shows up before the group, he casually introduces himself with the claim that he is in a “pre-marriage” agreement with Hisoka that states that Illumi is paid regardless of whether Hisoka is killed.
They came up with this arrangement because, in spite of having a beneficial and mutually beneficial relationship at the beginning of the course of the show, Illumi believed that either one of them could eventually kill the other.
