How To Watch Doctor Who Easy Watch Order Guide

It’s possible that the “Whoniverse” of Doctor Who is one of the earliest science fiction stories that’s still relevant today.

Battlestar Galactica is the only other show of its era that has a mood that is even remotely comparable.

I am well aware that fans of Doctor Who will not enjoy the comparison, but we can save that discussion for another time.

This is one of those shows with a mind-bending plot that is paired with some great character development, and Doctor Who is one of those series.

As a matter of fact, the several Doctors that emerge one after another, in the beginning, are not so likable because you are still upset over the prior one.

However, each of them, in their own unique way, finds a way to draw you into their worldview and points of view to the point that you are completely and utterly captivated by their charisma.

I knew I could convince you Whovians with this argument, as you can see.

Therefore, as a gift to the fandom, the following is an exhaustive watch order for the science fiction series.

Even if you haven’t seen a single episode yet and are brand new to this fandom, following this order will be helpful to you.

But before I get into it, there are a few disclaimers that you should read because they are both boring and vital.

Take your time reading them because, in the words of actor Ryan Reynolds, “boring is best.” It’s in the terms and conditions.

Since the Doctor Who franchise has a convoluted timeline that involves several spin-off shows, including Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class, as well as a few specials, it is important that the episodes be watched in the sequence in which they were originally broadcast.

Things To Know Before Starting Doctor Who

  1. Since 2005, there have been a total of 12 distinct seasons. On the other hand, the original series debuted on television in 1963.
  2. There are two main reasons why the OG is missing from this list:
  • The original series ran for a total of 26 seasons until it was canceled in 1989, however, it is not available online. It was partially due to the fact that it was the time for analogue devices like CD or VHS players, and it was also partly due to the fact that the BBC did not perform a very good job of maintaining them.
  • The second justification is based on the concept of practicability. The currently airing series has already aired 12 seasons, and production on the 13th season is underway. Keeping up with this is an undertaking that not many people are capable of doing. Adding another 26 seasons, which one has to first uncover from the deepest depths of our planet and then watch, seems like an unfeasible endeavour because of how difficult it is to get such locations.
  1. Along with the 12 seasons, several special episodes and spin-offs will be a part of the timeline. The Christmas and New Year’s specials are a part of the plot, so don’t skip those.
  2. Do not attempt to process the entirety of this watch order at once. You will absolutely not be able to keep any of it. Skim the finer points and enjoy the show season by season, along with any specials or spinoffs.
  3. I can’t believe I’m spoon-feeding you how to watch this cause the Whoniverse doesn’t dabble in spoon-feeding the plot and its meaning. But that’s alright. In other words, I’m getting you ready for it.
  4. The greatest way to watch this programme, and the only way I intend to watch it, is in chronological sequence.
  5. Don’t worry now that I’ve scared you a little bit. I’ve got your back, and following this viewing schedule will make watching as easy as one of The Good Doctor’s one-liners.

The documentary Doctor Who Extra is not chronologically relevant, hence I have left it off this list.

But if you need a break in the middle of the show, you may watch that and then catch the rest when you’re done.

Where To Stream Doctor Who?

Class is accessible on Amazon Prime Video while Doctor Who and Torchwood are available on HBOMax.

As I mentioned before, this applies to the current iteration of the Doctor Who franchise, not the original show that lasted from 1963 to 1989.

Run-Time And Binge Duration

  • Each episode of Doctor Who runs roughly 45 minutes on average, and there are 166 total episodes throughout 12 seasons and the specials.
  • On average, each of Torchwood’s 41 episodes (spread across 4 seasons) takes up about 55 minutes of your time.
  • The class lasted for only one season, consisting of eight episodes, with a runtime of around 46 minutes apiece.
  • Each episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures lasts roughly 25 minutes, while the entire series runs for a total of 550 minutes (5 seasons + 1 special).

Therefore, the total franchise runs for about 8 days or 192 hours.

Yes, you’re right, the Whoniverse is enormous. However, this should not keep you up at night. Don’t try to binge-watch all the Doctors and their stories at once; instead, take it slow and enjoy it.

About Doctor Who

The BBC has been airing the British science fiction series Doctor Who on television since 1963. The show originally ran from 1963 through 1989, and then returned in 2005.

The show follows the exploits of an alien nicknamed “the Doctor,” a Time Lord who blends in with human society.

The TARDIS is the time-traveling spaceship in which the Doctor travels as he investigates the mysteries of the universe.

The Doctor and his friends fight evil, rescue doomed civilizations, and aid the helpless.

Jodie Whittaker is the first female actor or actress to play the Doctor on the show.

A number of notable performers, including William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, and Peter Davidson, have taken on the role of the Doctor over the years.

Before William Hartnell, no one had ever played the title role of Doctor Who.

New books featuring the Tenth and Thirteenth Doctors will be released in June, and they will be involved in a crossover with The Wizard of Oz and King Arthur’s Camelot.
