What Happened to Flight 828 in Manifest? Is it Really a True Story?

‘Manifest’ is an American supernatural drama television series that chronicles the lives of a group of people who are resurrected after being missing and presumed dead for five and a half years.

Characters in this series by Jeff Rake are linked by their experiences on Montego Air Flight 828.

The strange occurrence on the flight from Jamaica to New York City sets in motion the events of the show and advances key plot lines.

Whether you’re a first-time viewer or a seasoned pro, you’ll want to know what happens after Flight 828 and how the story ties into real events.

Find out if the events of Flight 828 are based on a true story or not and everything else you need to know about it right here.

What Really Happened to Flight 828 in Manifest?

In ‘Manifest,’ the Montego Air Flight 828 charts its course from Montego Bay, Jamaica, to the John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, on April 7, 2013.

There was some turbulence during the flight, but it was only temporary.

The plane’s path is altered, and it eventually touches down at Newburgh, New York’s Stewart International Airport.

Arriving on November 4, 2018, passengers and pilots are informed of the current date. It has been nearly five and a half years since they left Jamaica.

After getting back to their regular routines, a group of passengers starts having visions that keep bringing them back to the air hangar where the plane is stored.

The plane blows up not long after everyone boards.

Ben Stone, a passenger on Flight 828, has a series of premonition-like visions that lead him to investigate the incident and come to the conclusion that the plane went down in the ocean.

Everyone on board was presumed dead but was brought back to life. Ben has determined that everyone on board will perish on June 2, 2024. The first pieces of evidence supporting Ben’s theory are appearing.

No definitive evidence suggests what happened to Flight 828 as of yet. But clues — such as the discovery of an airplane tail wing in the ocean with “Montego Airways” written on it — are being dispersed.

Theories range from time travel to alternate realities, and anything is possible.

The tail fin of Flight 828 and its pilot vanish at the end of Season 3. Thus, taking away the only clue Ben and Michaela had to uncover the truth about Flight 828.

The show is driven by the mystery of what happened on Flight 828, and we may not find out the truth until much later in the series.

The plot is similar to that of the popular TV show “Lost,” which follows a group of people who survive a plane crash and end up on a mysterious island.

Although the fate of the airline is hinted at throughout the series, we don’t find out for sure until the very end.

Is Manifest Based on a True Story?

False, “Manifest” is not based on actual events. The show is a bit out there due to the incorporation of the supernatural and angels.

Creator Jeff Rake revealed in an interview that the story was devised nearly a decade before its premiere, and he unsuccessfully pitched it around to studios.

The disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 in March 2014 piqued the interest of producers in his pitch.

Although the story of MAF 370 was not the sole inspiration for the series, Rake claims that it was an influence.

After years of fruitless searching, the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 has still not been located; it is presumed to have sunk in the Indian Ocean.

Some MAF 370 debris has been found, but the precise reason for the plane’s disappearance and the fate of its passengers is still unknown.

As Rake has previously stated, the mystery of Flight 828 is only a small part of the overall story.

The interpersonal relationships between the characters are the focus of the show, making it a relationship drama at its heart.

This makes ‘Manifest’ more like ‘Lost,’ and it also makes it more approachable. Since the show is obviously not based on actual events, we can safely assume that it is a work of fiction.

Fan speculation on what happened to Flight 828 has become an integral part of the show’s fan base, and it’s only going to get more convoluted as the season progresses.
