There have been few biographical crime dramas as successful as “Monster.” The success of “Monster” launched the career of director Patty Jenkins, who can now count “Wonder Woman” and other blockbusters among her credits.
‘Monster’ is widely regarded as a classic of the biographical crime genre and grossed over $100 million at the box office.
Charlize Theron, who played the lead role, gave the performance of her life in the film and was nominated for multiple awards for it.
Several other prestigious award categories also considered the film.
The film “Monster” depicts the murder spree committed by notorious serial killer Aileen Wuornos in late 1989 and early 1990. Street prostitute Aileen kills a sexually abusive client in self-defense.
However, her hunger for blood is not yet satisfied, and she goes on a killing spree that claims the lives of six more people. In her downward spiral, her girlfriend Selby Wall has been by her side, obliviously.
Aileen’s real-life sweetheart Tyria Moore was the inspiration for the character of Selby Wall.
Who is Tyria Moore?
After a night of bar-hopping in Florida in 1986, Aileen, then 30 years old, met Tyria, then 24.
As a result of spending the night together, the two became very close.
Upon meeting, Aileen and Tyria became inseparable, as described by Sue Russel, Aileen’s biographer.
This was the stability that Aileen needed, and she finally found it.
After getting together, the couple started living as a nomadic unit, frequently crashing at each other’s places, in motels, and even in the woods.
Aileen’s prostitution income supported their lifestyle. The two became close, and Aileen started calling Tyria “wife” out of affection.
In spite of this, the couple did experience some difficulties in their relationship. At first, Tyria was not a fan of Aileen’s line of work.
“Once I found out that she was prostituting, I did everything I could to help her stop doing that,” Tyria says of Aileen Wuornos in the documentary “Aileen Wuornos: Mind of a Monster.”
Aileen, however, was unyielding in her insistence. Furthermore, Tyria claims that Aileen has always had a short fuse and can easily lose her cool.
As a matter of fact, she had been questioned by law enforcement about her role in several separate incidents.
The couple stuck together through the rough patches in their relationship.
Yet again, the couple’s bond was tested when Aileen revealed to Tyria that she had killed a man named Richard Mallory in self-defense after he attempted to rape her (Mallory was later found to be a convicted rapist).
Tyria was shocked and worried that she would have to turn Aileen over to the police if she told them any more information, so she asked Aileen to keep quiet about the rest of the situation.
However, Tyria began to suspect that Aileen was stealing from the men she murdered after Aileen made a habit of returning with goods that were not hers.
Lacking any other options, the couple started pawning the stolen goods of the men Aileen would kill.
Where is Tyria Moore Now?
Following clues from pawn shops, the police were able to locate Aileen and Tyria. Aileen was eventually arrested at a biker bar in Florida, despite the fact that there was a severe lack of evidence.
For lack of any other evidence, the police relied on Aileen’s confession.
They tried to get a confession out of Tyria when all else failed. When Tyria visited Aileen in jail, she made several calls while under police surveillance.
She told Aileen that the police were conspiring to frame her for the murders during these calls and that they were doing so at the officers’ behest. Aileen eventually broke down and admitted her guilt, though she maintained that Tyria was innocent.
At the trial that followed, Tyria testified against her ex-girlfriend Aileen, saying that Aileen had admitted to her that Mallory had been her first murder victim.
Aileen was found guilty, given the death penalty for her crimes, and put to death on October 9, 2002.
Tyria is notoriously protective of her image and reputation.
She has since disappeared from public view and is focusing on her private life.
Some reports have indicated that she and her family currently make their home in Pennsylvania.
