Who is Matthew Muller & Where is he?

’20/20: Gone Girl’ on ABC. The case of Aaron Quinn and Denise Huskins, victims of a home invasion and kidnapping in 2015 and, within days, prime suspects in the case, is investigated.

Authorities initially suspected a staged event because the victims’ descriptions of the events were too fantastical and echoed those in the novel and movie “Gone Girl.”

The physical evidence, however, quickly pointed to Matthew Muller as the culprit in this case.

Let’s do some digging to find out where he is right now and everything else we can about him.

Who is Matthew Muller?

Matthew Daniel Muller is not your ordinary criminal; he served in the Marine Corps from 1995 to 1999, received a summa cum laude from Pomona College in California, and then went on to Harvard Law School.

Matthew was able to secure a permanent position as an immigration attorney at a San Francisco law firm thanks to his past accomplishments as a decorated officer and other credentials that spoke to his scholastic prowess.

However, he was permanently disbarred after filing for bankruptcy in 2015 and was accused of failing to return about $1,250 to a client when a judge ordered it for failure to provide adequate representation.

The incident involving Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn’s invasion of their property and abduction also took place that year.

Three months later, on June 5, Matthew was recognized as a suspect when he attempted to break into another California property.

Given that, it’s not surprising that the events unfolded similarly.

The only difference is that this time the victims were able to attack and scare off their attacker, preventing any further harm from being done.

By accident, Matthew dropped his phone, which led the authorities straight back to him and ultimately resulted in a major breakthrough.

Further investigation revealed that he had been mentioned as a suspect in a number of other home invasion and burglary cases throughout cities in California, despite never being charged or jailed.

Some of these instances dated back to 2009, and involved specifics.

Video proof showing he was the one who victimized Denise and Aaron was discovered in addition to many squirt guns with laser pointers strapped to them and blacked-out swimming goggles, which were discovered during a search of his family’s home.

Matthew’s intended victims were Aaron and his ex-girlfriend, but that is irrelevant now.

Where is Matthew Muller Now?

Federal authorities captured Matthew Muller in South Lake Tahoe on June 8, 2015, and he was later charged with kidnapping for ransom.

Since the federal court lacks authority over the sexual assault and robbery charges, they were dropped against Aaron.

In 2016, Matthew entered a guilty plea to the charge against him and was subsequently sentenced to forty years in prison.

Following an earlier determination that he lacked the requisite mental capacity to stand trial, a judge mandated that Matthew take antipsychotic medication until he could be tried.

During a court hearing in March 2022, Matthew used Zoom to appear from Napa State Hospital in California.

Then, he entered a plea of no contest to two counts of forcible rape.

Matthew also admitted to a burglary of a house, false detention, and robbery of a habitation.

For this reason, he received an additional 31 years of prison time to be served consecutively with his existing 40-year sentence.

However, it now appears that Matthew will be serving his time at a federal jail rather than the Napa State Hospital, where he was last seen.

Exit Matthew in 2049, as that is when he is set for freedom.
