In his guise as Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker has been one of the most misunderstood villains in fiction. The question is what led him to the dark side. Just how did the Sith tempt Anakin?
Why would Vader, if he were a bad guy, risk his life to save his son Luke? To prove his goodness, Anakin wouldn’t have murdered young Jedi or come close to choking his wife Padme.
George Lucas, the mind behind Star Wars, deserves credit for his brilliant decision to make Anakin, not Luke, the chosen one. Anakin was the one who would eventually find a middle ground between the Force’s two extremes.
Anakin’s fall to the dark side was inevitable so that he could ultimately bring peace to the galaxy. Since Anakin’s feelings for Padme were still forbidden by Jedi law, he had to resort to the dark side to save her life.
Many Star Wars fans, like the Jedi, believe that Anakin was vulnerable to the lure of the dark side of the Force because of this.
The promise to “save Padme from death” was made by Palpatine in exchange for Anakin’s joining the Sith. However, the story is more nuanced than that because Anakin continued his conversion to the Dark Side even after Padme’s death. When he did that, why did he do it?
Why Was Padme & Anakin’s Love Forbidden?
The rules of the Jedi Order forbade its members from developing emotional attachments to other people. For the same reason, infants were taken from their families shortly after birth. The Jedi Code forbade marriage and celibacy for its members. Jedi were created for one purpose: to serve the Republic as peacekeepers.
Now while all that no-strings-attached hoopla is fantastic, it falls short in the face of certain edge cases. Taking Anakin’s story as an example, the outcome was drastically different than anyone could have expected. In fact, it wasn’t until he was nine years old that his Force sensitivity was recognized.
He had developed strong maternal feelings by that point. He needed his mother’s protection because they were slaves on a desert planet where they faced a constant threat to their lives.
Have your extraordinary Midichlorian count only revealed when you meet a real-life princess? That’s a lot for a fully grown Jedi to handle, let alone a preteen like Anakin. Suddenly, he fell madly in love with her.
Intense human attachments were already present in Anakin’s life before he left Tatooine to become a detached Jedi.
The Jedi Order never felt confident in Anakin’s loyalty to the light side of the Force, and so they gradually distanced themselves from him over the years. The feeling of being alone had gotten to him to the point where he would have jumped at the chance to start a relationship with Padme. Padme reciprocated his feelings, and the two were soon married behind closed doors.
How Did The Sith Seduce Anakin?
Anakin has visions of his mother’s suffering and death in Episode II: Attack of the Clones. The Force was trying to tell him that something bad was going to happen to his mom, but he ignored it.
Anakin blamed the Jedi Masters directly for his mother’s death because they had disregarded his dreams and fears. She collapsed and died in his arms, broken and injured.
To my knowledge, that was the first time Anakin acted irrationally. In order to exact his revenge for his mother’s death, he kills everyone in the village.
Anakin not only killed those who attacked his mother, but he also put several innocent people to death. For the first time, he was starting to lose faith in all moral principles.
When Anakin has visions of Padme being hurt in Episode III, he is not willing to take any chances. When he goes to Jedi Master Yoda for advice, all he gets is a lecture about overcoming one’s fears and letting go of attachments.
Anakin’s trust in the Jedi is at its lowest point when Palpatine, in his guise as Chancellor, promises to help him.
Palpatine verbally reassured Anakin that the dark side of the Force could save lives. At this point, it’s worth noting that Anakin had not told Palpatine about any of the prophetic dreams he’d been having. Some have speculated that Palpatine intentionally made Anakin fear for Padme’s safety by planting such dreams in his head.
Even after Palpatine outs himself as a Sith Lord, Anakin continues to follow him in the hopes that he can save Padmé. Anakin, following Palpatine’s orders, slaughters defenseless youngsters in the Jedi order known as younglings. Padme is appalled by the changed appearance of Anakin. When the Anointed One sets his mind to something, however, nothing can stand in his way.
Did Anakin Try To Kill Padme? Did She Die?
Padme was shocked by the man Anakin had become, even as he went down a dangerous road for her. She goes so far as to attempt to rescue him and reorient him toward the “right” path. However, Anakin misinterprets the situation and concludes that Padme and the other Jedi are conspiring to kill him.
Anakin has, without a doubt at this point, completely lost touch with reality. He doesn’t know what’s true or false or even what’s real at this point. Anakin may have exhibited symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia, according to some. Plus, George Lucas comes from a family where mental illness ran in the blood.
Anakin, in a fit of rage, tries to choke Padme to death, having mistakenly concluded that she was plotting his death. Despite Obi-Wan chopping off Anakin’s remaining limbs and leaving him to burn to death, Padme manages to stay alive.
However, Padme’s life span is limited to the time it takes to give birth to her twins, and Anakin is brought back to life by the Sith Lord, who gives him a new mechanical body.
As he suspected, Padme attempted to kill Anakin by choking her. However, her life does not end there. However, it is possible that witnessing Anakin in his desperate attempt to kill her was the final straw that led to her demise.
Anakin, on the other hand, is concerned solely with finding Padme upon regaining consciousness following the lengthy operation that gave him a new body.
Palpatine tricks Anakin into thinking he killed her in a rage once again. However, Anakin must be at his weakest for Palpatine to successfully transform him into a Sith. After losing everyone he cared about, Anakin now only has Palpatine as a family member and a source of utter self-hatred. (Palpatine had given the order for Anakin to be conceived by Shmi.)
How Did Anakin Defeat The Dark Side?
There was a reason Anakin Skywalker was selected as the Chosen One. He contributed to the Star Wars franchise’s foundational idea that there are no clear-cut moral absolutes, only gradations of grey. Anakin did not feel welcome among the Jedi Knights, even though they represented the good side of the Force. However, when Anakin’s son Luke arrives, he realizes that his father was only acting out of love for his family.
Anakin finally finds someone he cares about enough to sacrifice his life for, and he does the same for Luke. As he attempts to save Luke, he is killed. When Anakin kills his master Darth Sidious, he also becomes a Sith Lord. Anakin achieves an uneasy equilibrium between good and evil within himself.
To protect Padme, Anakin had taken the path of darkness, but he now realized that his decision had been a mistake. To put it bluntly, he had no love for the Jedi. Later, he destroyed the Sith after learning that Palpatine was willing to have his son Luke killed simply because Luke had become a Jedi. His one and only interest seemed to be in pursuing the love he gave him.
At heart, all Anakin wanted was somewhere to put the overwhelming love he felt. It dragged him through some murky depths and brought him to dizzying heights. With nothing but love in mind at all times, etc. Probably one of the most maligned bad guys who gets a bad rap.
